SK&A has released a short summary of the U.S. pharmacy market that includes the 25 largest pharmacy chains in the U.S. Based on both the number of stores and pharmacists, the top five are:
- Walgreen’s
- CVS Corporation
- Walmart Stores Inc.
- Rite Aid Corporation
- Kroger Company
The report also includes these tallies:
- Pharmacy count by location size [A quarter of pharmacies have just one pharmacist]
- Pharmacy count by location type [10% of pharmacies are located within a hospital]
- Pharmacy count by ownership type [62% of pharmacies are operated by a pharmacy chain]
- Pharmacy count by state [California has the most]
