National Pharmacy Market Summary & Top 25 Pharmacy Chains

SK&A has released a short summary of the U.S. pharmacy market that includes the 25 largest pharmacy chains in the U.S. Based on both the number of stores and pharmacists, the top five are:

  1. Walgreen’s
  2. CVS Corporation
  3. Walmart Stores Inc.
  4. Rite Aid Corporation
  5. Kroger Company

The report also includes these tallies:

  • Pharmacy count by location size [A quarter of pharmacies have just one pharmacist]
  • Pharmacy count by location type [10% of pharmacies are located within a hospital]
  • Pharmacy count by ownership type [62% of pharmacies are operated by a pharmacy chain]
  • Pharmacy count by state [California has the most]
