How many units of blood are transfused in the US per year?

The number of units of blood transfused has been declining rapidly in recent years due to the change from open to laparoscopic procedures, among other factors.  Here are some statistics:

  • 15 million units of blood transfused in 2009
  • 11 million units transfused in 2013
