BENCHMARKING: Truven’s list of 100 Top Hospitals for 2014

This is the 21st in an annual list of top-performing hospitals in the U.S. that is prepared by Truven Health Analytics.  The hospitals are divided by category: major teaching hospitals, teaching hospitals, large community hospitals, medium community hospitals, and small community hospitals, so there is no overall ranking of, for instance, the top 10 hospitals in the U.S.

Here are some interesting high-level comparative statistics:

  • $5,648 inpatient expense per discharge for 100 Top Hospitals group
  • This is about 10 percent lower than comparison hospitals
  • 4.3 days average length of stay for 100 Top Hospitals group
  • 4.9 days average length of stay in comparison hospitals
  • 13.5 percent average operating margin for 100 Top Hospitals group
  • 4.1 percent average operating margin for comparison hospitals

Some hospitals have appeared on the list repeatedly, for example:

Major teaching hospital category

  • Advocate Lutheran General Hospital (Park Ridge, IL) — 15 times
  • Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, TN) — 14 times

Teaching hospital category

  • St. Thomas West Hospital (Nashville, TN) — 13 times
  • Riverside Methodist Hospital (Columbus, OH) — 11 times

Large community hospital category

  • Central DuPage Hospital (Winfield, IL) — 7 times

Medium community hospital category

  • Licking Memorial Hospital (Newark, OH) — 12 times
  • Holland Hospital (MI) — 9 times

Small community hospital category

  • Sutter Davis Hospital (Davis, CA) — 5 times
