The 2013 annual ranking of think tanks worldwide has just been released by the University of Pennsylvania. Once again, the Brookings Institution was rated as the overall top think tank globally.
Of the 30 top health policy think tanks ranked internationally in the report, these US-based organizations made the list and are repeats from last year’s ranking:
- Bloomberg School of Public Health Research Centers at Johns Hopkins
- RAND Corporation
- Brookings Institution
- Council on Foreign Relations Global Health Program
- Kaiser Permanente Institute for Health Policy
- Center for American Progress
- American Enterprise Institute
- Center for Studying Health System Change [ceased operation Dec. 2013; merged into Mathematica Policy Research]
- Center for Strategic and International Studies
- National Bureau for Economic Research
- Urban Institute
- Cato Institute
- Peterson Institute for International Economics

The US has 1828 of the world’s 6826 think tanks, substantially more than any other country.
