9.8 percent overall readmission rate: Moody’s nonprofit medians FY12

There’s all kinds of good stuff in this very brief Becker’s summary based on the annual Moody’s Investors Service medians for nonprofit hospitals.  The statistics in the article compare FY2011 and FY2012 data.  The FY12 data are based on audited financial statements for about 402 hospitals and health systems.

Here are some of the utilization medians for nonprofit hospitals for FY12:

  • 5,218 admissions
  • 81,703 emergency department visits
  • 5,218 observation stays
  • 1.59 Medicare case mix index
  • 9.8 percent readmission rate (overall)
  • 12.1 percent readmission rate (Medicare)

And here are the payer mix medians:

  • 44.1 percent Medicare
  • 33.4 percent Blue Cross/commercial/managed care
  • 13.1 percent Medicaid
  •   7.6 percent Self-pay and other

There is also a rarely-seen count of active medical staff:

  • 575 active medical staff (independent and employed)
  • 171 employed physicians
