What is a super ACO? And who do you invite to the dance?

There are accountable care organizations (ACOs) and then there are super ACOs, according to these authors, who are with BDC Advisors.  Their differentiation is that the ACOs are physician-led, while the super ACOs are health-system-led.  In this feature article, the super ACO concept is defined and the advantages enumerated.  A readiness self-assessment list is included.  How to determine the best partners to invite into the super ACO is discussed.

Examples of super ACOs:

  • Third Way (composed of Dignity Health, Hill Physicians, and the University of California, San Francisco)
  • Orlando Health and the University of Florida
  • Abington Health, Aria Health, and Einstein Healthcare Network (PA)
  • Stratus Healthcare (composed of Central Georgia Health System, Tift Regional Health System, and others)
