2012 US median hospital case mix index (CMI) was 1.38 … and other financial and operating indicators from Truven

I recommend getting a copy of this 2-page article!  You don’t even have to read any further, just DO IT!  This is a great opportunity to get 2012 median data based on 600 nonfederal acute care hospitals in the Truven Health ActionOI database.  The data are broken out for these categories:

  • All hospitals
  • Major teaching
  • Minor teaching
  • Large community
  • Medium community
  • Small community

There are 24 indicators related to operating margin and other financial indicators, utilization, expense and revenue, and productivity.

Why I like this article:  1. Credible data source.  2. 2012 national data.  3. Nice comparison of different types of general acute care hospitals.  4. You would have to pay to acquire these national indicators elsewhere.
