About 75 percent of hospices are independent: 2007 data

Here are some unpublished data from the 2007 National Home and Hospice Care Survey that a contact at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) was kind enough to provide.  The survey question is worded like this: Is this agency owned or is it in operation with any of the following places or organizations:

NUMBER OF HOSPICES BY AFFILIATION: US 2007

  • 1,590 (75%) totally independent
  •    380 (18% ) hospital & health system
  • 2,130 (100%) total

Source: Unpublished data.  Provided by Dr. Eunice Park-Lee of the Long-Term Care Statistics Branch of the National Center for Health Statistics on September 27, 2013.

There are other good sources of even more current information on this topic of: hospices by “auspice,” and of the percent of hospices by for-profit or not-for-profit status.  Give us a call if you’d like to explore the availability of these data.  AHA Resource Center (312) 422-2050, rc@aha.org
