FORECASTS: Which hospital service lines will grow?

These are forecasts from the analytics firm SG2 for increased and decreased utilization in the hospital setting.

Five-Year Forecast: Growth

  • +75% outpatient bariatric surgery
  • +59% admissions for stroke intervention services (like tissue plasminogen activator)
  • +17% hospital outpatient volume
  • +16% outpatient cardiovascular services
  • +16% knee replacement
  • +11% hip replacement
  • Outpatient advanced imaging
  • Some cardiovascular procedures, electrophysiology, vascular intervention in both the inpatient and outpatient setting
  • Advanced cancer surgery (inpatient)
  • Stroke treatment (inpatient) — will stabilize

Five-Year Forecast: Decline

  • (-) 3% inpatient discharges
  • (-) 2% NICU admissions
  • Inpatient cardiovascular discharges
  • Inpatient angioplasties
