How Many Hospitals Have Ownership in a Health Insurance Product?

In FY2011, 15% of U.S. community hospitals had an equity interest in a preferred provider organization [PPO], 13% had an ownership stake in a health maintenance organization [HMO], and 5% had an indemnity or fee for service health plan.

Comparative trend data is available annually from 2001. The data comes from an analysis using the AHA Annual Survey Databases.
