What’s it like to be a medical school department chair?

This is a nice collection of one research article and three commentaries on a topic that must be unusual to find anything written about–the evolving role of the medical school department chair (particularly the chair of a department of medicine).  Also touched on is how the department chair fits into the larger academic medical center and its power structure.  What was once the apex of a career is often no longer perceived as a dream job.  There are also tensions between the department chair and the division chiefs.  Today there are few department chairs who are perceived of as heroes by medical students.  Considerations in making the department chair’s job more manageable are proposed.
