POPULATION HEALTH: How are “populations” defined?

How “populations” are defined in the population sciences is examined in this lengthy, scholarly article with lots of references.  The author, with the Harvard School of Public Health, was surprised to discover a certain lack of definition, except in the statistical sense, and calls for more work in this area.
