CATH LABS: Dual-use labs to care for stroke patients

Considerations in expanding an existing cath lab to also care for stroke patients by adding the appropriate technology and staff expertise in endovascular procedures are examined in this brief article by a consultant.  Adding this capability helps to maximize utilization of existing cath lab resources.  It is also a logical next step for hospitals that are already offering a primary stroke center.  Among the hurdles to doing this are the potential turf battles among specialists, the need to acquire high-ticket dual purpose imaging equipment, and the need to train staff.
