What trends are likely to affect the health care field over the next year? The American Hospital Association has issued a 2013 environmental assessment that identifies key issues in the following major areas:
- Associations
- Consumers & demographics
- Economy & finance
- Information Technology & e-health
- Insurance & coverage
- Political issues
- Provider organizations & physicians
- Quality & patient safety
Among the points in the synopsis on provider issues — concerns are raised about the shortage of primary care physicians and the growing inadequacy of the current primary care delivery system. The need for hospitals and health systems to become much leaner in every way is stressed.
