Medical Group Practices: Integrated System and Corporate Affiliation Trends

There were 12,838 medical group practices in the U.S. with 5 or more physicians in 2011. Of these, 42.6% were corporate-affiliated, an increase of about 5% since 2007. Integrated system-affiliated medical groups represented 27% of all medical groups, up 12.3% from 2007. Larger medical groups – those with 20 or more physicians – are more likely to be system-affiliated than small groups. Nearly 44% of larger groups are affiliated with a system.
