EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS: Geriatric EDs next trend?

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center (Paterson, NJ) is credited with being among the pioneers of the concept of the geriatric emergency department.  There are an estimated 12 geriatric EDs in operation nationwide, with perhaps another 50 in development.  At least one expert predicts that most major hospitals will begin to offer some form of special facility for the emergency care of seniors within the next 5 years.  Another example of a hospital that is doing something similar is Methodist Medical Center (Peoria, IL).
