ACUTE CARE FOR ELDERS: Saves about $1000 per inpatient

The establishment of a dedicated Acute Care for Elders nursing unit in hospitals has been studied in three separate randomized controlled trials.  This article, which focuses on the third trial, demonstrates that these units have a shorter length of stay and lower costs per inpatient.  There was no increase in readmission rates after discharge from this unit.  Ideas for establishing a similar model of care without having a dedicated unit are also discussed.
