OPERATING ROOM: Benchmarks for hospital ORs

I’m always excited to find an article citing hospital operational benchmark statistics!  This is a study based on responses from 134 US hospitals using 2010 data as part of McKesson’s OR Benchmarks Collaborative.  The respondents include a higher proportion of academic medical centers than the overall population of US hospitals, otherwise the sample is representative of all US hospitals.

The benchmarking data are given for median, 90th percentile, and 95th percentile.  Here is an example of just one of the statistics provided:

  • 28.5 minutes median turnover time (from prior patient exiting room until next patient enters room)

There are also interesting data on the most frequently performed types of procedures, the use of block scheduling, and case cancellation rates.
