What’s the average charge for a hospital stay?

Hospital charges can vary widely depending on diagnoses/procedures involved and other factors. That said, the question still gets asked, so here are the national 2009 estimates derived from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s HCUPnet online tool:

Average/mean charge:

  • $30,655 [4.6 days in the hospital]

Median/mid-point charge:

  • $16,140 [3.0 day stay]

The charge for a hospital stay involving pregnancy/childbirth averaged $12,909, with a median of $9,921, while a hospitalization for multiple significant trauma mean charge was $102,249 [median $62,866].
