US: 31,100 residential care facilities with nearly 1 million beds

About half of the 31,100 residential care facilities (which includes assisted living and personal care homes) in the U.S. are small, with 10 beds or less, according to this national market overview drawn from a survey conducted by the US National Center for Health Statistics.  The majority of RCFs (82 percent) are private, for-profit facilities.  They are more commonly found in the West than in the Northeast.  Nationally, there are 177 residential care beds per 1,000 persons aged 85+.
