2011 Annual Survey: Employer Health Benefits

The latest annual report of employer health benefits trends and costs is out. The study, a joint effort of the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research and Education Trust, covers these topics:

  • Cost of health insurance
  • Health benefits offer rates
  • Employee coverage, eligibility, and participants
  • Types of plans offered
  • Market shares of health plans by type
  • Worker and employer contributions for premiums
  • Employee cost sharing
  • High-deductible health plans with savings option
  • Prescription drug benefits
  • Plan funding
  • Retiree health benefits
  • Wellness programs and health risk assessments
  • Health reform
  • Employer opinions and health plan practices

Among the many findings, the survey found health insurance premiums for single employee coverage were 8% higher than 2010; for family coverage there was a 9% increase over last year. Across all plan types, the single annual premium averaged $5,429, with the employee contributing $921 [18%] of the cost. The annual premium for family coverage was $15,073, with the employee paying $4,129 [28%]. The average employee premium contribution remained steady compared to 2010, with the employer absorbing the rise in premium costs. However, the trend in greater employee cost sharing  when using health services continues with annual deductibles, co-payments, and co-insurance that vary considerably across plans.

The report provides a wealth of statistical trend and benchmark data on employee health plans, with accompanying chart packs and presentation slides.
