Joint Commission Names Top Hospitals on Key Quality Performance Measures

For the first time the Joint Commission has named names — the top 405 hospitals that performed best in 2010 on key quality measures. Each named hospital achieved a 95% or better performance target for every accountability measure for which it reported data, excluding any measures with less than 30 eligible cases or patients.

The top performer list of hospitals was included in the Joint Commission’s annual report on quality and safety that examines national progress on hospital achievement on evidence-based quality process performance measures related to heart attack care, heart failure care, pneumonia care, surgical care, and pediatric asthma care. Overall, the report documents that hospitals have made significant gains on the key quality process measures, but room for improvement remains. The national composite performance for the core quality measures improved from 88.2% in 2006 to 96.6% in 2010. More recent performance measures on inpatient psychiatric services, venous thromboembolism [VTE] care, stroke care, and perinatal care are reported on as well, providing national performance benchmarks.

The report is based on over 3000 Joint Commission accredited hospitals that contributed data. The Joint Commission’s QualityCheck.org web site provides data on the performance of other participating hospitals.
