Hospital operating margins show cyclical pattern

Hospital operating margins are typically highest in the second quarter and lowest in the third and fourth quarters of the calendar year, according to an analysis of data from 2005 through 2010 from the nonfederal general acute care hospitals that provide data to the Thomson Reuters ActionOI database.  The median operating margin in the fourth quarter 2010 was 2.75 percent.
