ACO Alternatives

ACOs (accountable care organizations) have dominated the health care reform landscape; however, a recent article in HealthLeaders Media suggests some other models that may provide a better fit with a hospital’s overall strategic planning:

  • low-cost leader – providing a tightly focused, highly branded service with emphasis on low cost and patient convenience
  • niche clinical service provider – focus is on a specific set of services, usually a service line
  • research/innovation institute – focus is on bench or translational research
  • island – a sole community provider
  • virtual health organization – an entity that contracts to support care services provided by others, but does not itself own a provider site
  • vantage integrated strategy – described as an “ACO on steroids”
