Senior-friendly emergency departments

The lead article in this month’s ED Management newsletter focuses on emergency departments that meet the needs of senior adults. The author notes: “A growing number of medical centers are establishing separate EDs to take care of older patients who have different clinical and emotional needs than younger populations.”  In creating a senior-friendly experience, hospitals look at such diverse elements as mattress thickness, lighting, noise, screening tools, patient triage, and clinician training. Hospitals and systems mentioned in the article include St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Paterson, NJ; Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, MD; and Trinity Health, Novi, MI.
