High quality, high efficiency

The Commonwealth Fund recently published a synthesis report on lessons that can be learned from the experiences of four hospitals that have been identified as making significant advances in quality, safety, and efficiency:

  • Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina, MN
  • North Mississippi Medical Center, Tupelo, MS
  • Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, MN
  • Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, Portland, OR

Commonalities among the organizations included:

  • Clear goals for the organization and the alignment of daily practice with those goals
  • Implementation of quality improvement strategies and monitoring performance indicators against benchmarks
  • Use of technology as a tool to improve quality and efficiency
  • Use of full-time, on-site physicians such as hospitalists to coordinate services and enhance continuity
  • Improvement of provider communication during handoffs
  • Standardized and simplified processes to eliminate redundancy, improve patient flow, and reduce errors
  • Participation in an integrated delivery system
