Physician alignment has supply chain implications

Hospitals that are acquiring or affiliating with physician practices are going to have to decide to go one of three ways regarding supply distribution:  1.) work with separate acute-care and non-acute care distributors (or perhaps even more than two distributors); 2.) try to find one distributor that can serve both the hospital and the physician practices; or, 3.) go with self-distribution.  Considerations in making this choice are covered in this article, which also includes survey results for a “2011 Physician Alignment Survey.”  According to the supply chain execs who responded to the survey, over three-quarters intended to maintain just one prime distribution relationship.
