Ambulatory surgery center best practices and benchmarks

Results of a survey of ambulatory surgery centers concerning preprocedure, procedure, discharge, and total facility patient throughput times are reported in this short article.  Although this article is limited to low back injections for pain management, the comments from the best performing facilities could be of a broader interest.  For example, we “follow a strict schedule when giving patients times for their appointments,” or, we “have preop staff work together to prepare a patient so 2 patients are ready at any time.”  Low back injections were chosen for study because of the rapid growth in demand for these procedures in the outpatient surgery setting.
