Design guide for the built environment of behavioral health facilities

The National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems has released a new edition of its design guide focused on general adult inpatient behavioral healthcare units. The guide outlines general space planning considerations, including those related to safety and outdoor areas.  Best design practices and ‘bright ideas’ on construction and materials are shared for each of the following environments:

  • Staff and service areas
  • Corridors, counseling, and interview rooms
  • Lounges and activity rooms
  • Patient rooms
  • Patient toilets
  • Admissions
  • Seclusion rooms
