Share of Nursing Homes Located within a Hospital

Of the nation’s nearly 16,000 nursing homes, 6.6% are located in hospitals, according to an analysis of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services data by Leading Age. [Leading Age is the new name for the former American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging.]

When looking at nursing homes by ownership type, 30% of government-owned nursing homes are part of a hospital; 15% of not-for-profit nursing homes are hospital-located; and 1% of the for-profit facilities are part of a hospital.

On the flip side, American Hospital Association data indicates a quarter of U.S. community hospitals had a skilled nursing unit in 2009.
