Workhorse of the hospital? Mister ED!

For many individuals, the emergency department is their first introduction to the hospital.  Emergency departments are a chaotic 24/7/365 portal to other hospital services: primary care, surgery, imaging, psychiatric evaluation, etc.   EDs provide some of the most costliest care in the health care continuum, yet they are persistently overcrowded  with patients presenting everything from a toothache to traumatic injuries.  Read about four hospitals that have enthusiastically embraced their emergency department conundrum and created centers of care that operate at exceptionally high levels of efficiency, deliver quality care, and earn high marks from both patients and staff.

Four hospitals included in the study:

  • Cambridge Health Alliance (MA)
  • Grady Health System (Atlanta, GA)
  • Mercy Medical Center (Cedar Rapids, IA)
  • Scripps Health (San Diego, CA)
