When the smoke clears: creating a smoke-free campus

In recent years, hospitals have been increasingly moving to smoke-free or tobacco-free environments as a part of their commitment to employee and public health efforts. A survey conducted in 2008 found that 45 percent of hospitals in the U.S. had policies that banned smoking on their entire campus. The Joint Commission and the Henry Ford Health Health System have produced a guide to help hospitals implement and enforce smoke-free or tobacco-free policies. The guide, titled “Keeping Your Hospital Property Smoke-Free” is available for free download.
